The wind cut through the empty streets like icy knives. Berlin trudged home, her coat pulled tightly around her. Snow crunched beneath her boots, and the streetlights flickered faintly in the cold silence.
Near a small shed, she saw a dog curled around a trembling puppy. Its fur was white as snow, eyes bright blue. The mother dog lay motionless.
Berlin hesitated. She didn’t like dogs much, but she couldn’t leave the puppy alone in the freezing night. She scooped it up, feeling its tiny body shiver against her chest, and hurried home.
